UPDATE WITH SUMMARY OF OUTCOME COMING SOON.
After 18 months of discussion and data gathering, none of the bridge options were selected as a crossing for Wiehle therefore TF Cornerstone will contribute $1.6 million to the county per their proffer. A tunnel was the desired option by the study group participants, however, most noted that the monetary cost of a tunnel at $10 million would make it almost impossible to implement. The study group strongly urged the supervisor to completely revise and revisit the north/south access for pedestrians, bicyclists and automobiles which will be at a standstill when 6,400 cars come and go from Campus Commons in a 24 hour period. It was noted several times by Fairfax County traffic experts that the entire Wiehle corridor has not been looked at in relationship to all the development that has been approved and proposed.

Below is the announcement from the Hunter Mill Supervisor’s office when it began:
Good Morning All:
As you may know, TF Cornerstone, is the owner of the Campus Commons property located at 1900 and 1902 Campus Commons Drive in Reston, Virginia. On October 15, 2019, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved rezoning application RZ 2017-HM-018 to permit the development of two residential buildings and an additional office building on the Campus Commons property, subject to certain proffered conditions (http://ldsnet.fairfaxcounty.gov/LDSnet/ldsdwf/4693075.PDF).
Under the proffers, TF Cornerstone is required to coordinate with the Hunter Mill District Supervisor’s office to convene a study group that will evaluate options for a pedestrian crossing of Wiehle Avenue between the Campus Commons development and the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station. The options may include an at-grade crosswalk, an above-grade pedestrian bridge, and/or a below-grade pedestrian underpass. The development plan associated with the rezoning approval includes a potential at-grade crosswalk and three potential pedestrian bridge configurations. The study group is to provide a recommendation for a preferred option to the Board of Supervisors. Fairfax County Staff will evaluate the study group’s preferred option and also make a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. The Board of Supervisors will approve the pedestrian crossing to be implemented.
The purpose of this email is to invite you to a meeting to initiate the study group, which the proffer specifies must be done within 90 days of rezoning approval. The meeting will be held on January 13, 2020, from 7:00pm – 8:00 pm, at the Hunter Mill District Supervisor’s office (1801 Cameron Glen Drive, Reston-Community Room A). This initial meeting will provide background on the approved rezoning, an overview options for a pedestrian crossing, and a process and timeline for the study group to develop and make a recommendation.
We look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Please email or call me at 703-478-0283 if you have any questions.
